These Cities Have the Highest Auto Theft Rates
Nearly 750,000 cars are stolen in the United States each year. After seeing declines alongside overall crime rates, auto thefts saw a resurgence during the height of the pandemic. This was attributed to a spike in unemployment rates; some Americans who lost their jobs resorted to stealing cars to make money.
Just like other crimes, auto thefts vary significantly on a geographic level. Western states experience higher rates of car theft than those in the Midwest or Northeast. Maine and Vermont pride themselves as the cities with the lowest rates at just 42 and 57 car thefts per 100,000 people.
While many would assume that car theft is rampant in populous cities, research shows that there’s almost no relationship between city size and the likelihood of getting a vehicle stolen. Smaller cities with fewer residents normally show a higher per-capita frequency than more densely populated places.
To determine America’s auto theft capitals, researchers at BuyAutoInsurance.com used data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report, as well as the US Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. Cities were ranked according to their respective car theft rates per 100,000 residents.
