Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day: Learning More about the Most Advanced Stage of Cancer

Every 13th of October, the nation observes Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, an annual campaign that seeks to educate the public about metastatic breast cancer – the most advanced stage of cancer. The entire month of October is actually observed as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Even though we’re seeing an increasing number of breast cancer survivors, the disease continues to claim the lives of many women whose breast cancer has already metastasized or spread to other areas of their bodies. At this stage, the chances of beating cancer are extremely slim.

Hopefully, with the observance of Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, more people will come to understand the final phase of cancer. The more information they get, the more they’ll get motivated to take part in the cause and support breast cancer patients who are fighting for their lives every single day.

Everything to Know about Metastatic Breast Cancer

Before you decide to get involved in the awareness campaign, it’s important that you equip yourself with as much information as possible about metastatic breast cancer. Here are some basic facts about this stage of cancer to get you started:

  • Metastatic breast cancer is known as Stage IV cancer.
  • More than 155,000 women and men in the country are grappling with metastatic breast cancer.
  • Even if patients have been “cleared” from their early-stage cancer, approximately 20-30% of them are still at risk of cancer recurrence.
  • Anyone who has been diagnosed with an earlier stage of breast cancer can potentially experience a metastatic recurrence at some point in their lives.
  • While metastatic breast cancer is still treatable, it’s no longer curable. Unlike early-stage breast cancer, treatment for metastatic breast cancer is lifelong to prevent the cancerous cells from spreading any further.
  • Metastatic breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in young women under 40 years old, accounting to 3% of cancer deaths.
  • Men represent 1% of deaths from metastatic breast cancer.
  • Although metastatic breast cancer is not considered a chronic disease, it can eventually be. As with HIV or diabetes, patients will be dependent on medications for 20 years or more.
  • The most common forms of treatment are targeted therapies or systemic chemotherapy. In some cases, surgery and radiation are performed.

Help Breast Cancer Patients Beat the Disease

You can make the observance of October 13 – Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day a most memorable one when you donate an old and no-longer-needed vehicle to Breast Cancer Car Donations. Your charitable deed will surely help save lives.

These IRS-certified 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations provide their beneficiaries with financial assistance as well as access to medical facilities so they can undergo full treatment, thus increasing their chances of surviving the disease. They also offer free breast cancer screening as well as other breast cancer prevention and education services.

While your vehicle donation will provide breast cancer patients and their families with the resources to fight the life-threatening disease, you, too, will benefit from your charitable contribution.
