Ways to Protect Yourself While Nursing Your Baby
A common condition affecting breastfeeding mothers is mastitis, an inflammation of the breast tissue generally caused by infection. The condition causes pain, swelling, and redness of the affected breast area. In some cases, patients experience chills and fever.
Nursing mothers who suffer from mastitis often grow tired quickly. This makes it more difficult for them to care for their babies. The condition also causes them to wean their babies from breastfeeding earlier than the prescribed period.
To protect the health of both the mother and her infant, it’s important to notice the early signs of mastitis and have it treated quickly.
While mastitis is common for lactating women, some men also experience the condition.
What Causes Mastitis?
Mastitis has many causes. Here are the two most common ones:
1. Blocked milk duct
Breastfeeding mothers become prone to mastitis when their breasts do not empty at feedings, causing their milk ducts to get clogged with the excess milk. The blockage often causes the milk to retract, causing the infection.
2. Bacteria
Mastitis can also be caused by a bacterial infection. When a baby breastfeeds, some bacteria from the baby’s mouth can stay on the surface of the mother’s breast. The bacteria then enter the milk ducts through the nipple’s opening or cracks in the skin. Stagnant milk in the breast that is not emptied during feeding may also cause bacteria to develop.
Risk Factors for Mastitis
Breastfeeding moms face several risk factors for developing mastitis. They include sore or cracked nipples, previous experience of mastitis, pressure on the breast that can restrict the flow of milk, improper nursing techniques, poor nutrition, smoking, and overfatigue.
How You Can Minimize the Risks of Mastitis
While nursing your baby, do not forget to take care of your health as well. Here are some tips on how you can minimize the risk of developing mastitis:
- Make sure you completely drain your breasts when breastfeeding.
- Make sure that your baby empties one breast before switching them to the other.
- With every feeding, alternate the position that your baby uses to breastfeed.
- Make sure your baby is properly positioned before beginning to breastfeed.
- Avoid smoking.
You Can Help Save the Lives of These Individuals
Any nursing mother can minimize the risks of developing mastitis. However, the same cannot be said for certain maladies such as breast cancer, a life-threatening disease that can strike any adult with little or no warning.
Thousands of individuals across the country are suffering from breast cancer. Worse, many of them have no access to essential medical treatment simply because of poverty.
You can extend a helping hand to them with just a little effort on your part. All you have to do is donate your old and unwanted car to us at Breast Cancer Car Donations. For years now, we have been working to help save the lives of destitute breast cancer patients throughout the country.
Once we receive your auto donation, we’ll sell it through an auction and use the proceeds to support the life-saving programs and services of our breast cancer-focused nonprofit partners. These IRS-certified 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations use the extra funding we provide them to sustain their delivery of comprehensive breast health services to their beneficiaries.
Thus, thanks to your donation, more uninsured and underserved breast cancer patients will be able to gain easy access to medical facilities where they can undergo full treatment. Our charity partners also offer free breast cancer screening, follow-up care after treatment, and other breast cancer prevention and education services.
In exchange for your vehicle donation, we’ll send you the 100% tax-deductible sales receipt of your sold car within days following its sale. This receipt will enable you to claim the maximum tax deduction for your donation in the next tax season.
We’ll also tow your car away for free wherever you are in the country.
On top of these material perks, your act of charity will also allow you to experience the joy and satisfaction of doing something that can help save precious lives.
We accept nearly all types of vehicles, including those that are no longer in good condition.
